How to become a police officer

First and foremost lets go through the bottom line basic requirements you need to meet before even considering applying to the academy.

  • You need to be at least 18 years old, which makes sense because who wants anyone under 18 wielding a deadly firearm
  • You need to be a US citizen either by birth or naturalized
  • You must have a form of lower education such as a high school diploma or a GED
  • A valid drivers license is an obvious requirement because you have to be able to drive
  • Your record must be clean of ANY felony convictions as well as any misdemeanor convictions that can impact your reliability when using a firearm

Things to spruce up your resume/application:

  • Be physically fit, now when I say physically fit I don’t mean bone thin, I mean well built. By being well built you show that you are able to commit to something other than the police academy. Treat it as evidence that you can actually do something long term. When you are applying to become a police officer you are basically saying, I can stick with this program for the next 2 years, and they want to know that you can.
  • Have a higher education, bachelors, masters or Ph.D. Again having these degrees shows commitment but it also might help you and give you an advantage with different aspects of the job. For example having a law degree might help you with the plethora of written examinations you will need to pass.
  • Practice and know what you are getting into BEFORE getting into it– what I mean is be prepared. Don’t assume that you know what will be going on from TV shows, do research and go in there ready to rise above the rest.

All in all becoming a police officer is one of the most noble things you can do, just don’t underestimate the rigor.
