Collateral:  What it is and is it required?

On most bail bonds collateral is not required.  If the bail amount is large, then collateral may be required.  Collateral can be a pink slip to a vehicle or putting a lien on a property.  If the bail is over $200,000 then depending on the situation, collateral may be a requirement.  For a bail of $200,000 that requires collateral, someone must be willing to put up a house or property that has equity equaling close to the full bail amount.   A lien will be placed on the property until the bail premium is paid and until the person finishes all their court dates.

In some situations where the bail is lower, collateral may be required if someone doesn’t have a down payment.  On smaller bail bonds collateral in the form of a pink slip may be required.  By signing over the pink slip, the bail bond company will then put a lien on the vehicle until all payments are made and the case is finished in court.  Once finished, the lien will be removed.
